Boulder Valley Schools Move to Add Antisemitism Protections After ADL Complaint
The Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) in Boulder, Colorado, is drafting policy changes to address antisemitism after the Anti-Defamation League filed a federal Title VI complaint alleging a Jewish student at Southern Hills Middle School endured repeated slurs, harassment and physical assault throughout seventh and eighth grade, and that the district failed to respond. Superintendent Rob Anderson apologized publicly at an Aug. 11 board meeting, said the district is in voluntary mediation with the ADL, and outlined plans to add antisemitism to bullying policies, create a coordinated incident-response team, expand staff training and form a superintendent's advisory committee including Jewish community members. Roughly 45 people spoke during two hours of public comment, reported by the Daily Camera; parents described harassment their children faced, while about a third of speakers urged the district not to adopt ADL curricula or definitions, citing concerns that the organization conflates criticism of Israel with antisemitism. The board postponed final policy language pending a closed legal briefing and a public work session.
